Why this test matters
Carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content strongly influences material behavior and quality. Deviations can indicate contamination, degradation, or a formulation error. Organic element analysis helps companies verify composition, ensure batch consistency, and meet regulatory or customer specifications. It applies to 3D-printed structures, coatings, plastics, and other surfaces, wherever confirming exact elemental composition matters for quality or compliance.
How the test works
A sample of just a few milligrams undergoes flash combustion, with the resulting gases carried away by helium. The combustion products are then oxidised or reduced so they leave as water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen gas, a clean signal for each of the three elements being measured. These gases are separated in a gas chromatography column and finally quantified by a thermal conductivity detector.
What you learn from this test
The test delivers precise concentrations of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, often expressed as weight percentages or trace levels. Results help validate formulations, monitor degradation, compare suppliers, and support compliance documentation. Companies use these insights to improve material selection, optimize processes, and make confident decisions on quality, performance, and certification.
