Why this test matters
Particle size and shape strongly influence how a metal powder flows, packs, and performs during processing, and even small variations can lead to inconsistent layers or defects in a 3D-printed part. Static image analysis characterizes the size and shape distribution of atomised metal powders directly, helping you catch a problematic batch before it reaches the printer. It applies to metal powder, plastic powder, and 3D-printed metal structures, supporting quality control, supplier validation, and consistent additive manufacturing results.
How the test works
Using the Nano 500XY particle characterisation instrument, your powder sample is dispersed onto a glass substrate with an integrated dry powder disperser, spreading individual particles out so they can be measured accurately. The instrument then scans the sample under its optical system, capturing high-resolution images of individual particles, and specialised software analyzes those images to determine size and shape parameters for each one.
What you learn from this test
The test provides detailed particle size distributions and shape descriptors such as aspect ratio or circularity. Results help you compare powder batches, validate a new supplier, or confirm a powder meets the specification your printing process requires. With this data, you can catch inconsistencies before they affect layer quality, reduce defects, and make confident decisions on powder selection and process control.
